Geoff Sheard, Fläkt Woods’ vice-president – fan technology, has been elected to the board of the Air Movement and Control Association International (AMCA), as its first European director for some years. This not-for-profit organisation, founded in 1954 but claiming origins dating back to 1917, brings together the world's manufacturers of related air system equipment and has members in most industrialised countries.

He was elected for his acute understanding and perspective on the industry, beginning with his background in engineering. He progressed at Rolls Royce from apprentice, through university, earning a B.Eng. from Liverpool University and a technical doctorate from Oxford University. Finally, he earned an MBA from Cranfield University School of Management before becoming chief of turbomachinery engineering. Since joining Fläkt Woods, he has received a further PhD from the University of Northampton. He has been appointed a visiting fellow at Northampton University and an external examiner at Cranfield University and has lectured on both technical and management subjects at universities in the UK and overseas.

This unusual engineering/academic combination is complemented by his rare experience of running a major business unit. In addition to being the Fläkt Woods ultimate technical authority on all matters concerning rotating equipment, he has global management responsibility for its multi-million global Tunnel & Metro business unit.

AMCA will exploit Dr. Sheard’s unparalleled experience in furthering its mission to promote internationally the health and growth of the air handling industry in serving industrial, commercial, and residential markets. Its scope includes every type of air handling system and component from fans and louvres to dampers, controls and beyond.

Geoff Sheard said, “I aim to improve significantly AMCA’s focus on the international standards and legislation that impact our industry on a worldwide scale. Working for Fläkt Woods, a truly global air movement and controls specialist, gives a unique interest in both the ‘Movement’ and ‘Control’ sides of AMCA.”

Dr. Sheard will be able to use both the Fläkt Woods network and AMCA’s own resources to gather information on standards and legislation development around the world. He will combine the two strands to support an AMCA drive for global harmonisation. The ultimate aim is to reduce the non-tariff trade barriers that currently hinder products developed in one global region from being sold in another.

Cedric Sloan, director general of FETA, said, “We share the view that global harmonisation is increasingly important and welcome AMCA focus in this area. It will be invaluable that AMCA’s strategy is informed by Geoff Sheard, whose technical and commercial expertise is internationally recognised. I look forward to our organisations working closely together for the benefit of the industry and its customers.”
