The UK Ministry of Defence has ordered Symes Axial fans from Fläkt Woods, as part of a general upgrade of the ventilation requirements on two frigates HMS St Albans and HMS Iron Duke.

The contract, due in December is for a mixture of centrifugal axial fans and chilled water cooling fans. They are required because the roles of the two vessels, originally intended to serve in the North Atlantic, have been changed to tropical waters crafts so their ventilation requirements need to be upgraded.
HMS St Albans has recently been on the news for evacuating British nationals from the Lebanon, and has been serving in the Northern Gulf where it is tasked with protecting the Iraqi Oil Platforms a few miles off the Iraqi coast.
HMS Iron Duke is currently on a tour of duty in the Caribbean. It has a range of specific diplomatic and military responsibilities, amongst which are providing reassurance to UK Overseas Territories and allied nations, and conducting Counter Drug Operations. The multifunctional warship will, in the eventuality, provide a rapid response to any natural disaster that could occur during deployment.
Symes Axial fans come in a range of 13 sizes, each with at least 2 alternative impeller pitch angles, and are designed to withstand 70g dynamic acceleration in any direction. They comply with BS EN ISO 9001.94, N.A.T.O. Quality Standard AQAP-1Edn3 and BS EN ISO 9001.94. With LM6 aluminium castings, they are X-rayed to ensure minimum porosity and a domed cover encloses the motor shaft extension.
Extractor gear permits easy withdrawal from motor shaft. Maximum permissible temperature of air being handled ranges from -40°C to +82°C.
